I consulted Dr. Saab for an obstructed ureteric calculus that was causing significant discomfort. I was advised to undergo URS surgery to break the stone. I was clearly told that it would be a 2-day admission procedure under anesthesia, and based on this assurance, I agreed and got admitted to Sir Ganga Ram City Hospital after obtaining all necessary insurance approvals.

I had full faith in the doctor, as he came through reliable references and projected strong confidence and expertise. Naturally, I expected the stone to be completely addressed during surgery.

However, after coming out of anesthesia, I was informed that only a stent had been placed and the stone was left untouched. Importantly, no consent was taken from my relatives for this change in the treatment plan. The explanation given was that pus was present in the ureter, although my pre-operative urine reports were sterile. I was then told this was “standard protocol” and that I would need multiple ESWL (shock wave lithotripsy) sessions, possibly 3–4 weekly sittings, after antibiotic coverage.

Later, different reasons were provided for not breaking the stone during URS — first that the stone was too large and could cause complications, and then that it was positioned higher. This was confusing because the stone location and size were already well-defined in the CT scan, and URS is meant to address stones throughout the ureter.

As a result, I had no choice but to undergo four painful and expensive ESWL sessions, after which scans finally confirmed that the stone was cleared. Even then, the doctor insisted on doing urocopy again during stent removal, despite the CT scan clearly showing a fully cleared tract, making the additional procedure unnecessary in my opinion.

This entire experience has left me deeply disappointed. It raises serious concerns about how patients with health insurance are treated in large corporate hospitals, where repeated procedures, investigations, and interventions seem aimed at maximizing insurance utilization rather than prioritizing patient comfort and well-being. Despite already being charged heavily for scans, investigations, surgery, and consultations, there appeared to be continued intent to add further procedures.

What is most troubling is that experienced doctors, whom patients trust the most, can put patients through avoidable pain, discomfort, and financial burden. As a health policy holder, one also needs to preserve coverage for future needs within the same year — a factor that was completely disregarded.

This experience has significantly shaken my trust. Patient comfort, transparency, and informed consent should be central to medical care, and unfortunately, that was not my experience here.
